Upgrade your Old Macbook yourself and Enjoy 4x Speed Upgrade [hardware]

I own a macbook 5,1 ( late 2008 ) which comes with a 120 gb normal harddisk and 2x1gb ram.

Recently, I decided to upgrade my harddisk and ram at bestbargain@Simlim with the following:
  1. 120gb Intel 320 Series SSD @SGD294 (wanted to get OCZ but it's out of stock)
  2. 2x2gb kingston @SGD18 each
I also bought these at the same shop:
  • 16gb cruzier blade @SGD23.
  • A harddisk cover @SGD10 only, which turns my old harddisk into a portable one!
For info on installation, check here and here

The end result is a write/read performance of more than four times improvement!! Woo hoo! Boot time also improves from 55seconds to 16 seconds. Now I can run several application without lag :]

The results of xbench are below:

Old performance.

New improvement.

If you live in Singapore, you can save a lot of time by bringing your laptop to the shop/simlim instead of fixing yourself. I learnt it the hard way.

Update:
For macosx installation on ssd. Be sure to get your install CD ready.
You will need to reformat your new ssd harddisk into Mac OS Extended (Journaled). If you forget to reformat new disk before changing, don worry, disk utility is available at the menu bar.
